Ear Wax removal treatment methods

Our clinical wax care specialists will be able to talk through the options, review your completed health questionnaire and advise on the most suitable method for you.

Manual Extraction

Manual ear wax removal treatment is performed using a long thin instrument that are carefully and gently used dislodge the wax and remove it from your ear. This method is most typically suitable for removing a small amount of wax that has built up near the entrance of your ear canal.

Before you go for an ear wax removal treatment, it is important to oil your ears ideally 3-5 days before your appointment. This helps to soften the wax in preparation and make the treatment much more effective. If you have any questions, please contact us on 0800 422 0157 ahead of your appointment.

After the procedure there is a risk of developing an ear infection if aftercare is not followed. Therefore, it is important to keep your ears clean and dry for at least 5-7 days post procedure.

Irrigation

The water irrigation method as an ear wax removal treatment allows the technician to flush warm water through the ear canal using an ear irrigator, allowing the wax to be removed. The irrigation solution is carefully warmed to body temperature to reduce dizziness and/or vertigo (which can commonly occur if the solution is either too warm or too cold). We use the spray to gently stream water into the ear, it may need to be repeated a couple of times. When the wax has been removed, we use a special mopping apparatus to dry the ear canal.

This is an extremely safe, gentle and effective method. This procedure is typically used to remove larger quantities of ear wax.

Microsuction

Microsuction is the cleanest and safest ear wax removal treatment as it does not require water to remove the wax.

A fine tube is connected to a suction machine. Our ear wax technician is able to view your ear canal with the aid of a microscope to allow them to see exactly where the wax build up is. It is a very thorough process and is particularly suitable for smaller ear canals and for those who may have suffered problems with their ears previously, such as ear drum perforation.

The technician will first examine your ears to confirm there is earwax present. Using the information you provide on your pre completed health questionnaire, we will determine is microsuction is a viable option for you based on previous ear health.

The safety and wellbeing of every child is our priority so please call us on 0800 4220157 before booking to save time and consultation charges as these cannot be refunded afterwards.

paediatrics

Ear wax blockages for children is a real issue, worsened by the current NHS provision.
Whilst paediatric care is more complex than adult treatments, we are earwax removal specialists and will endeavour to help where possible.
We sadly cannot offer treatments for patients under 5 years old and would require a parent or guardian to call us pre booking for any patient under 16 years of age, so we can advise what treatment may be necessary (and possible) at which clinic.
